What to know about Corfu

  • Corfu Town is a full urban centre, not a resort strip
  • Year-round activity, not only in summer
  • A relatively large island with dispersed infrastructure
  • Close to Albania and the mainland by ferry

Most licensed pharmacies are in Corfu Town and its immediate surroundings. The island is elongated, and villages in the north and south are far — a 40 to 60 minute drive into town is not unusual. If you are staying in Sidari or Kassiopi, factor that in.

Local tipCorfu is wetter than the other islands and its season is shorter. Outside the summer months direct flights thin out and the route goes through Athens.

When to come, and what changes

Corfu is green because it rains. The wet season runs from November to March and it is significant. In summer the island is pleasant and less hot than the Aegean. Direct flights are seasonal; the rest of the year the route goes via Athens. Corfu Town, unlike the resort villages, functions as a full town all year.

Planning your timing

The island is long and getting into town from the north or south takes time. As in Crete, that turns a prescription arranged in advance into a real saving rather than a nicety.

The process is the same everywhere in Greece, and the prescription is valid at any licensed pharmacy in the country. You fill in a questionnaire, a Greek-licensed physician reviews it and decides independently, and if approved you receive a digital prescription in your passport name.

What people ask us

We're arriving in October. Is it still season?
The end of it. Some resort villages are already starting to close, but Corfu Town is fully active. If you are travelling in October or later, plan to redeem in town rather than in a village.
Is the process any different from the other islands?
No. Same questionnaire, same physician, same digital prescription. The only difference is logistical — how far the pharmacy is from where you are staying.
