Mainland · Three peninsulas
Medical cannabis in Halkidiki — for visitors
Halkidiki is not an island and has no airport of its own. You arrive through Thessaloniki and drive out to one of three peninsulas — and the distance is what decides your planning, including where it makes sense to redeem a prescription.

01 · Geography
Three peninsulas, three different realities
"Halkidiki" covers three long fingers of land, and they are not interchangeable:
- Kassandra — the closest and busiest, with the densest run of resorts and the shortest drive.
- Sithonia — quieter and more spread out, with longer distances between villages and a thinner services network.
- Athos — the eastern peninsula, most of which is the autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos and not a tourist destination at all.
Ouranoupoli, at the edge of the Athos peninsula, is where secular Halkidiki ends. It is also the furthest point from the airport that a visitor would realistically stay.
02 · Distances
How long the drive actually takes
This is the only practical question that really matters here. From Thessaloniki airport:
| Destination | Roughly | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Kassandra (northern end) | ~77 km | about an hour |
| Nikiti / Neos Marmaras (northern Sithonia) | — | about 1¼ hours |
| Southern Sithonia · Ouranoupoli | — | 2 hours or more |
Those are normal-conditions figures. In peak season the coastal roads slow considerably, and the last stretch on Sithonia is winding rather than fast.
The planning consequence is simple: redeem in Thessaloniki before you drive out. The city has a full year-round pharmacy network; the resort strips do not. If a pharmacy is out of stock once you are on a peninsula, the fallback is the same drive again.
03 · Pharmacies
What the pharmacy situation looks like
In the larger Halkidiki towns there are working pharmacies year-round. In the seasonal resort strips the picture changes with the calendar: between roughly November and March some businesses close and opening hours contract.
Greek pharmacy hours are set regionally, not nationally, with mandatory opening Monday to Friday only. In summer the district pharmaceutical association publishes extended hours for the main towns. The duty rota, which is legally binding and covers evenings and weekends, is posted on the front of every closed pharmacy and on the regional association's site. The full rules are on the redemption page.
04 · Season
The long summer, and the quiet winter
Halkidiki's season runs long — the coast stays pleasant well into autumn — but it does end. Thessaloniki works all year as a real city rather than a resort, so the contrast between the city and the peninsulas widens in winter.
If you are visiting outside the season, treat the city as the place where everything gets done, and the peninsula as somewhere you go afterwards.
